PHD SCHOLAR | UNIVERSITY OF CAPETOWN | 2019-22

Alfred Elikem Kunutsor is a Ghanaian born, South African resident who holds an MA and BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg-South Africa. Majoring in Physical theatre, Alfred’s approach to the performing arts has been deeply rooted in physical presence rather than genre classifications.  He is an educator, theatre maker and a performer who believes in a holistic approach to performance where boundaries and segmentations are blurred. His major works has been in education and theatre making in Ghana, South Africa and Germany.

His research interest started with a critical investigation into how societal structures transform both the physical and mental state of the performer in identity (trans) formation. Since his Masters research investigation, Alfred has engaged in collaborative works around the transformative power of performance both in child education and with professional artists. His current PhD investigation is looking at designing a regenerative African theatre making practice based on a whole system approach for sustainability, looking at deeper questionings around indigeneity, decoloniality and contemporaneity.
