It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Gregor McLennan, our colleague, friend and one of the founding trustees of the Stuart Hall Foundation.
Greg was a social and political theorist, an immensely talented academic and author of many books and articles. Of key importance to the Foundation was the volume of Stuart Hall’s work that he edited and introduced, titled Selected Writings on Marxism, published by Duke University Press in 2021. Greg had a forthright style and a love for animated political and philosophical debate. Since his early years at the Birmingham University CCCS in the mid-1970s, Greg retained a close friendship with Stuart, who passed away in 2014, and with the Hall family.
Greg’s commitment to the Foundation was substantial right from the start. He was Chair of the Academic Committee for several years, he was an enthusiast of the Essay Prize, and saw the importance of the Foundation reaching out to the next generations. Greg was Emeritus Professor of Social Science at Bristol University and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Science.
Greg died while out hiking in North Wales. He is survived by his life-partner Suzanne Battleday and their two children Ruairidh and Finn.
Gregor McLennan 21.10.1952 – 29.6.2026.

The Stuart Hall Foundation will publish a full tribute to Greg in the coming months.
