Citizens of Nowhere

Join 2019 Stuart Hall Library Artist-in-Residence Alicja Rogalska for a screening and discussion about her work developed during the residency alongside two other videos. The three works are concerned with issues of citizenship, immigration and identity, viewed through the lenses of classification methods and systems, legal fictions in immigration law and the lived experiences of statelessness. The screening will be followed by a discussion with cultural organiser and producer Joon Lynn Goh and a Q&A.

The works screened will include: What If As If (2017), The Aliens Act (2019) and Citizens of Nowhere (2019). Total running time of the videos will be 40 mins.

The Stuart Hall Library Artist’s Residency is an annual funded opportunity established in partnership between Iniva and the Stuart Hall Foundation, that builds on Stuart Hall’s unique contribution to intellectual and cultural life, and the distinct connections between both organisations. The three-month residency allows a visual artist the space to think about some of the key themes related to the work of Iniva and the Foundation, including the language of the diaspora, culture, identity and archiving.

Participants

Alicja Rogalska mostly works in specific contexts making situations, performances, videos and installations in collaboration with other people, to collectively search for emancipatory ideas for the future. She has recently presented her work at City of Women Festival in Ljubljana, Biennale Warszawa, Kyoto Art Centre, Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka and MuseumsQuartier in Vienna.

Joon Lynn Goh is a cultural organiser and producer, working at the intersection of art, wilful citizenship and solidarity economies, bringing together lived experience and collective imagination to ask how do we survive well together? Projects include Migrants in Culture, a network of migrant cultural workers organising against the Hostile Environment Policy; and Making Time, a collective research project unearthing the histories of South/East/Asian diasporic art and activism in the UK. Joon Lynn has curated and produced for In Between Time, Arnolfini, Situations, Battersea Arts Centre, Punchdrunk, London International Festival of Theatre and has acted as a lead organiser for Citizens UK Bristol.
