The SHF/CHASE AHRC Studentships support studentships for Home candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds to undertake doctoral research in arts and humanities. Applicants with an interest in the work and legacy of Stuart Hall are particularly encouraged.

The RACE.ED/SHF Fellowship offers a Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH). Applications from postdoctoral scholars working in any area of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are invited. While applicants are not required to be limited solely to focusing on the work of Stuart Hall, meaningful engagement with his wide-ranging repertoire, either in theory, method or topic, is encouraged.

The Stuart Hall PhD Scholarships are awarded to one student in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester and covers fees and a stipend. The Scholarship supports those working in an interdisciplinary area of study focused on one of Stuart Hall’s many areas of interest: cultural studies, race, ethnicity and inequalities. Applications for this studentship are particularly welcome from candidates from non-traditional or disadvantaged backgrounds who are under-represented at graduate level in the School of Social Sciences at Manchester.

A studentship is offered as part of a collaboration between the Stuart Hall Foundation, the Humanities Division at Merton College (University of Oxford), offered to DPhil candidates applying from any Faculty in the Humanities Division. The studentship which is funded by the University of Oxford’s Clarendon Fund and Merton College, Oxford, aims to support the Foundation’s vision to encourage scholars, artists, and researchers to build on Professor Stuart Hall’s legacy. Candidates with particular research interests in Professor Stuart Hall’s areas of expertise are encouraged, including cultural theory, criticism and reception; race, ethnicity, and identity; and the politics of diasporic experience. The successful candidate will be encouraged to participate in the interdisciplinary research networks and programmes hosted by the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH).

The AHRC-funded Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C) brings together eight leading universities across the Midlands, to support research students to become experts in their field and to employ their knowledge and skills in their career destinations.
North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP)

The AHRC North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NWCDTP) doctoral studentship competition supports studentships for Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Disabled students. This is part of a range of positive action measures to support addressing the disproportionately low participation of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic students and Disabled students in the NWCDTP’s cohort.

The SHF-QMUL HSS Principal’s Studentship supports PhD applicants (or current PhD students in their first year of study – or the first two years of a part-time programme) that are eligible to pay Home fees and that meet specific eligibility criteria. There are no restrictions on areas of research/disciplines/Schools within which candidates for the SHF-QMUL HSS Principal’s Studentship intend to pursue their studies. As long as the eligibility criteria are met, students applying (or that are already enrolled in their first year) to any School within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences can also apply for the SHF-QMUL HSS Principal’s Studentship.

The Stuart Hall Fellowships offer up to six fellowships at the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities and the Scottish Graduate School for Social Science. The fellowships provide opportunities for UK candidates from non-traditional and disadvantaged backgrounds, under-represented at graduate level in the Arts and Humanities and the Social Sciences in Scotland. Applicants whose planned research aligns broadly with one of Stuart Hall’s interest areas such as cultural studies, race, ethnicity and inequalities, are preferred.

The Stuart Hall Foundation University of Sussex PGR Studentship offers a funded studentship to Black British students to cover fees for up to 4 years per studentship. Sussex are particularly interested in applicants whose research proposal focuses on areas of interest to Stuart Hall including Postcolonial and Diasporic Modernities; Cultural Studies; Race, Ethnicity and Visual Cultures; Radical Thinking on the Left; the production of the ‘other in contemporary societies, e.g. through institutions such as citizenship, education, law, politics. Preference is given to applicants from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds.
Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust

M7 Scholars
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust are a specialist mental health trust with a focus on training and education alongside a full range of mental health services and psychological therapies for children and their families, young people and adults. The Stuart Hall Foundation/Tavistock studentship is aimed at widening access to the M7 course and to the Child Psychotherapy clinical training at the Tavistock Centre, with applications invited from students who identify as Black, Asian or of Mixed Heritage. The bursary can contribute to the student’s fees up to Post Graduate Diploma qualification, and also to the cost of psychoanalytic psychotherapy fees in order to support a student should they wish subsequently to apply for a training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP)

2023 – 25 PhD Scholars
PhD studentships support black British students studying for a PhD in the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP) and cover UK tuition fees, a stipend and a research training support grant. The scholarships can be held in any of the 7 institutions of the WRDTP. The successful candidates will undertake research projects that focus on one of Stuart Hall’s many areas of interest: cultural studies, race, ethnicity and/or inequalities, and their work will align with one of the DTP’s seven thematic interdisciplinary pathways.
