Deniz Ugur
M7 SCHOLAR | TAVISTOCK AND PORTMAN NHS FOUNDATION TRUST
Deniz is a second year masters student on the Tavistock’s M7 course, perinatal, child, adolescent and family work: a psychoanalytic observational approach.
She has always been passionate about improving the lives of children and young people, having experienced hardship and other difficulties during her own upbringing. To begin with, she worked in the media and human resources while volunteering at youth charities, before realising that what she really wanted was to support vulnerable young people struggling with their mental health. This newfound passion drove Deniz to re-train as an Integrative Counsellor.
Since 2019 she has worked in paid and volunteer counselling roles for various organisations, including the suicide department of a youth counselling charity, a youth homelessness charity, and a service supporting men and boys who have experienced sexual violence. She has also provided long-term therapy to young adults in her own private practice. Currently, Deniz runs a mental health service for a primary school where she supports the whole school community.
Her work has sparked a deep fascination and belief in the power of the unconscious and how an individual’s early experiences influence their personality. As a result of her studies on the M7 course, Deniz has also developed a particular interest in adolescence and intergenerational trauma.
Through the Tavistock’s child and adolescent psychoanalytic psychotherapy professional doctorate, she soon hopes to work psychoanalytically in the NHS. Ultimately, through her work, Deniz’s goal is to empower children, young people and the systems that support them, and to help contribute to a more positive, harmonious and fairer society.
