Batseba Asefaw and Kairo Maynard have each been awarded a Stuart Hall Foundation/Tavistock studentship for their studies at the Tavistock Centre.
Batseba and Kairoare MA students at the Tavistock Centre where they have completed the MA course (M7)Working with Children, Young People and Families: A Psychoanalytic Observational Approach. Following this course, they both plan to pursue the Professional Doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy.
Batseba has used psychoanalytic and child development thinking to challenge and push beyond her own conventional way of thinking. She has addressed the existing power dynamics within the organisations and institutions she works with, encouraging increased authentic and meaningful member participation.
Kairo’s main interests and the driving force for her work focus on intergenerational trauma and attachment, racial injustice and health inequalities which she has spoken and written about on a number of occasions. She is passionate about improving access to mental health services for Black and other marginalised communities, whilst also advocating for further inclusion and visibility of Black, Asian and ethnic minority therapists and trainees.
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust are a specialist mental health trust with a focus on training and education alongside a full range of mental health services and psychological therapies for children and their families, young people and adults. The Stuart Hall Foundation/Tavistock studentship is aimed at widening access to the M7 course and to the Child Psychotherapy clinical training at the Tavistock Centre, with applications invited from students who identify as Black, Asian or of Mixed Heritage. The bursary can contribute to the student’s fees up to Post Graduate Diploma qualification, and also to the cost of psychoanalytic psychotherapy fees in order to support a student should they wish subsequently to apply for a training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
Paul Dugmore, Associate Dean Learning and Teaching, Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust said:
“The Department of Education and Training at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust is committed to widening access to its courses and clinical trainings and considers its partnership with the Stuart Hall Foundation an important contribution to this. The purpose of the bursary is to support widening access to the MA in Working with Children, Adolescents and Families: a psychoanalytic observational approach, which is the pre-clinical course leading to application to the Tavistock Child Psychotherapy clinical training. We are delighted to be working with the Foundation in co-funding and supporting these studentships, which have been awarded to Batseba Asefaw and Kairo Maynard. We look forward to continuing to support them in their studies with us.”
