New Scholarship and Fellowship Awards

Stuart Hall PhD Scholarship at the University of Central Lancashire A new three-year Stuart Hall PhD Scholarship funded jointly by the Stuart Hall Foundation, Honeywell Inc. and the Hollick Family Charitable Trust has been awarded to Jade Montserrat at the Institute for Black Atlantic Research at the University of Central Lancashire, Preston. Jade Montserrat studied at Courtauld Institute of Art and Norwich School of Art and Design. Jade works at the intersections of art and activism, progressing through performance and live art, works on paper and interdisciplinary projects. Jade will work on a practice-led PhD project Race and Representation in Northern Britain in the context of the Black Atlantic. Scholar announced at the University of East London The Stuart Hall PhD Scholarship at the University of East London has been awarded to Erica Masserano. Erica is a PhD student in the Cultural Studies and Creative Writing department at the UEL. Her interest in the politics of recognition and the right to have rights has been paired with translating and editing texts about workers’ rights and migration, investigative fieldwork and work on oral history and living archives projects. Erica will be working on a creative writing collection of autobiographical accounts from marginalised London communities and analysing the relationship between place and identity emerging from them, in the context of the emergence of new media and the changing face of the City. Scholar announced at Birkbeck, University of London The Stuart Hall PhD Scholarship at Birkbeck, University of London has been awarded to Matt Martin. Matt will start his studies at the Department of English and Humanities and Birkbeck Poetics Research Centre later this year. Matt’s PhD project entitled Nation Language Poetry as Political Resistance in the Caribbean and the UK combines his poetic interests with his professional work on Caribbean history. For ten years, Matt has worked at the Museum of London Docklands, overlooking docks built for Caribbean sugar cargoes. Matt’s poetry appears in journals and books. He has participated in readings, poetry exhibitions and events, and is currently completing an MA in Poetic Practice at Royal Holloway, University of London.
