The Stuart Hall Foundation is thrilled to welcome twenty-five new members to our Peer Network.
The new cohort includes M7 Scholars at the Tavistock Centre, Fellows at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh, MA Scholars at the University of Sussex, and PhD Scholars with the Consortium for the Humanities and the Arts South-East England (CHASE), University of Manchester, Midlands Graduate School, Midslands4Cities, Scottish Graduate Schools, University of Sussex, and White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP).
We also welcomed a PhD Scholar supported by a new partnership between the Stuart Hall Foundation and the Humboldt University of Berlin.
The new members of our Peer Network were welcomed by the Stuart Hall Foundation’s staff team and Academic Committee in the Autumn this year at a special in-person introductory meeting and workshop.
The Academic Committee is comprised of SHF Trustees and Associates Nasar Meer, Becky Hall, Catherine Hall, Michael Rustin, Nick Beech, Derron Wallace, Giorgia Doná, Kennetta Hammond Perry, Roshini Kempadoo, Ruth Ramsden-Karelse, Remi Joseph-Salisbury and Shamim Miah. The Academic Committee oversees the SHF’s development of partnerships with academic institutions, supports delivery of the Peer Network programme and assesses applications as part of the selection process for recruiting new scholars and fellows.

The SHF/CHASE AHRC Studentships support studentships for Home candidates from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds to undertake doctoral research in arts and humanities. Applicants with an interest in the work and legacy of Stuart Hall are particularly encouraged.

The RACE.ED/SHF Fellowship offers a Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities (IASH). Applications from postdoctoral scholars working in any area of the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences are invited. While applicants are not required to be limited solely to focusing on the work of Stuart Hall, meaningful engagement with his wide-ranging repertoire, either in theory, method or topic, is encouraged.

The Stuart Hall Foundation’s partnership with Humboldt University of Berlin offers a scholarship for a doctoral candidate who will act as junior lecturer and researcher in English cultural studies, with the aim to pursue research for a doctoral degree. The scholarship is awarded to a candidate with a degree in English Literary and Cultural Studies (Anglistik), with excellent knowledge of written and oral communication in English and German. Candidates are required to possess knowledge in British cultural studies and related areas, such as literature, film, media, popular culture, as well as a general interest in cultural theory, especially the work of Stuart Hall.

The Stuart Hall PhD Scholarships are awarded to one student in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Manchester and covers fees and a stipend. The Scholarship supports those working in an interdisciplinary area of study focused on one of Stuart Hall’s many areas of interest: cultural studies, race, ethnicity and inequalities. Applications for this studentship are particularly welcome from candidates from non-traditional or disadvantaged backgrounds who are under-represented at graduate level in the School of Social Sciences at Manchester.

The SHF/Midlands4Cities (AHRC) studentships support studentships for Black, Asian and Minoritised Ethnic candidates eligible for home fees to undertake doctoral research in arts and humanities. The AHRC-funded Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C) brings together eight leading universities across the Midlands, to support research students to become experts in their field and to employ their knowledge and skills in their career destinations.

The Stuart Hall Fellowships offer up to six fellowships at the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities and the Scottish Graduate School for Social Science. The fellowships provide opportunities for UK candidates from non-traditional and disadvantaged backgrounds, under-represented at graduate level in the Arts and Humanities and the Social Sciences in Scotland. Applicants whose planned research aligns broadly with one of Stuart Hall’s interest areas such as cultural studies, race, ethnicity and inequalities, are preferred.

The Stuart Hall Foundation University of Sussex PGR Studentship offers a funded studentship to Black British students to cover fees for up to 4 years per studentship. Sussex are particularly interested in applicants whose research proposal focuses on areas of interest to Stuart Hall including Postcolonial and Diasporic Modernities; Cultural Studies; Race, Ethnicity and Visual Cultures; Radical Thinking on the Left; the production of the ‘other in contemporary societies, e.g. through institutions such as citizenship, education, law, politics. Preference is given to applicants from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds.

Preference is given to applicants from underrepresented or disadvantaged backgrounds, who intend to pursue a doctoral degree.

M7 Scholars
The Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust are a specialist mental health trust with a focus on training and education alongside a full range of mental health services and psychological therapies for children and their families, young people and adults. The Stuart Hall Foundation/Tavistock studentship is aimed at widening access to the M7 course and to the Child Psychotherapy clinical training at the Tavistock Centre, with applications invited from students who identify as Black, Asian or of Mixed Heritage. The bursary can contribute to the student’s fees up to Post Graduate Diploma qualification, and also to the cost of psychoanalytic psychotherapy fees in order to support a student should they wish subsequently to apply for a training in Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (M80).
White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP)

PhD studentships support black British students studying for a PhD in the White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP) and cover UK tuition fees, a stipend and a research training support grant. The scholarships can be held in any of the 7 institutions of the WRDTP. The successful candidates will undertake research projects that focus on one of Stuart Hall’s many areas of interest: cultural studies, race, ethnicity and/or inequalities, and their work will align with one of the DTP’s seven thematic interdisciplinary pathways.
